Tin Can

What is meant by Tin Can?

The term "Tin Can" refers to an open standard technology for learning records, also known as "Experience API" (xAPI). This technology allows tracking, storing, and exchanging learning activities and experiences regardless of location or medium. Tin Can API was developed to overcome the limitations of SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) and provides a broader capture of learning activities, including those that occur outside traditional LMS (Learning Management Systems).

Typical software functions in the area of "Tin Can":

  1. Learning Record Management: Capture, storage, and management of data related to learning activities recorded through the Tin Can API.
  2. Reporting: Creation of detailed reports on learning activities and progress based on the collected data.
  3. Data Integration: Integration of learning records from various sources and systems into a central database.
  4. Analysis and Evaluation: Analysis of the collected data to assess learning effectiveness and identify trends and patterns.
  5. Cross-Platform Compatibility: Support for integrating Tin Can API with various learning management systems, mobile applications, and other digital learning platforms.
  6. Experience Capture: Recording and managing learning and experience data beyond traditional eLearning modules, such as informal learning, simulations, and social interactions.

Examples of "Tin Can":

  1. Learning Modules: Online courses and learning activities tracked via Tin Can API, including progress and completion data.
  2. Simulations: Interactive simulations where user actions and decisions are captured to assess learning progress.
  3. Mobile Learning Applications: Apps that capture learning activities on mobile devices and transmit the data to a central system via Tin Can API.
  4. Social Learning: Recording of learning activities and interactions occurring in social learning platforms or forums.
  5. Performance Tracking: Monitoring employee performance in completing tasks or projects and integrating this data into learning records.
